What is the hybrid cloud? Why is it important?

Cloud Computing: While companies are trying to find a balance between having all IT services on-site and off-load computation time and storage in the cloud, an intermediate solution has emerged: the hybrid cloud computing.

For years, computer makers and financial managers of companies are actively looking into cloud computing, but the most security-conscious reluctant to transfer their data and workloads in the cloud. Today, the underlying technology of cloud services available for deployment within companies. This is a new model that is taking place in the company: the hybrid cloud.

What is the hybrid cloud?

The hybrid cloud is a combination of a public cloud provider (as that Amazon Web Services , Google Cloud or Joyent Compute ) and a private cloud platform, for use by a single company. The public and private cloud infrastructures, which operate independently of each other, communicate via an encrypted connection, using a technology that promotes data portability and applications.

The accuracy of this definition is important: public and private cloud environments in a hybrid cloud device are independent and separate. This allows companies to store protected data or privileges in a private cloud while retaining the ability to leverage the IT resources of the public cloud to run applications based on these data. Exposure data is thus limited to a minimum, since sensitive data is not stored long-term in the public cloud component.

It is important to understand that the concept of hybrid cloud is not simply down to connect any server to a public cloud provider and qualify the hybrid. Private infrastructure to execute a form of cloud services, such as NemakiWare , a software stack management Enterprise Content (ECM) open source code based on the interoperable standard CMIS, or Joyent SmartDataCenter , a platform cloud computing management platform for deployment of private and hybrid cloud.

The advantages of a hybrid choice

One of the undeniable advantages of the hybrid cloud model is to have a private infrastructure on site that is directly accessible, in other words, it is not provided via the public Internet. The access time and latency are thus considerably reduced compared to public cloud services. Faced with the imminent risk of a consolidation of ISP -level individuals and professionals in the United States, the current suspension of the net neutrality rule and the torrents of threats between ISPs and service providers is a disproportionately high risk of relying on the internet functioning, it represents a single point of failure that can cause failure of the normal operations of an entire company.

Another advantage of a hybrid cloud model is the ability to have an IT infrastructure on site capable of withstanding the average workload for your business, while retaining the ability to use the public cloud for recovery situations hot where the workload exceeds the computing power of the private cloud component.

With the hybrid model of cloud computing, computer makers have more control over the public and private components that using a public cloud platform ready for use.

The corollary benefit is that you only pay the additional computing time when these resources are required. Consequently, for companies that have key events throughout the year and require computing time well above normal (tax season, for example), the use of public cloud is a cheaper solution setting up a private infrastructure that is inactive most of the year.

In addition, the establishment of the private part of a hybrid cloud also allows some flexibility in the design of the servers. It gives businesses the flexibility to configure a quick archive storage in a certainly lower cost. Combined with the announcement of new SSDs for servers 19 nm and hard drives with helium 6 TB of HGST , data storage (fast or slow) can be achieved without backup tapes.

Should the hybrid model is not suitable

Although the hybrid cloud offers various advantages over the only public cloud, it suffers from the same problems of security and privacy that plague the popular perception of public cloud platform providers. For many companies, allowing information to pass on a network that may be subject to capture or interception by third parties poses a reckless and unnecessary security risk.
